2cm vs 3cm countertops is a decision most people make on the assumption that thicker is better, and that assumption gets the answer backwards more often than not.
Here is the part that surprises everyone. A 2cm slab finished with our standard mitered edge comes out at 1 5/8 inches at the front. A 3cm slab left as it comes finishes at about 1 1/4 inches. The thinner slab produces the thicker looking countertop.
2cm vs 3cm Countertops: The Short Answer
We fabricate both, and the choice is genuinely a preference rather than a right answer. Most of our California customers go with 2cm.
The reason is the edge. With 2cm, the front edge gets built up, either by laminating a second piece underneath or by mitering, and you end up at 1 5/8 inches or larger. With 3cm you get the natural thickness of the slab, which is 1 1/4 inches, and that reads smaller than most people expect once it is installed.
Put the numbers side by side and it is clearer still. A 3cm slab gives you one edge thickness, 1 1/4 inches, and that is what you get. A 2cm slab gives you 1 1/2 inches laminated, 1 5/8 mitered as our standard, or 2 inches and 2 1/4 if you want it heavier. Every one of those is thicker than 3cm. The thinner material is the only one that gives you a choice.
The other real difference is what sits underneath, and that one has consequences for your cabinets.
2cm vs 3cm Countertops: What Each One Actually Is
2cm
About three quarters of an inch. On its own that looks thin, which is why the front edge is always built up to something heavier. It goes in over a plywood underlayment, which supports the slab across the cabinet run.
Every edge profile we make starts from this. The slab is 2cm and the finished face ends up at 1 1/2 inches, or 1 5/8 on our standard miter.
3cm
About an inch and a quarter. It is thick enough to sit on the cabinets without plywood underneath, which is the main practical argument for it.
The edge is the slab itself, so what you see at the front is 1 1/4 inches. Some people prefer that, particularly on a more traditional kitchen where a heavy edge would look out of place. It is a legitimate choice and we build plenty of them.
Plywood, and Why Your Cabinets Matter
This is the part nobody explains, and it is the one that can actually go wrong.
A 2cm top goes over plywood. A 3cm top does not. It sits directly on the top of your cabinets.
Now here is the thing about installation. A countertop has to be level, full stop. Not level with the cabinets, level in itself. If your cabinets are out of level and the stone has to be brought level anyway, something has to give.
With 3cm sitting directly on the cabinet, that shows up as a gap between the underside of the stone and the top of the cabinet, right where the two meet. With 2cm, the plywood underlayment gives us somewhere to absorb it.
This is not a reason to rule out 3cm. It is a reason to talk about your cabinets before you choose. If your cabinets are new and set true, it is a non-issue. If they are older, or they have moved, it is worth knowing before the stone is cut rather than on installation day.
Two Ways to Build a Thick Edge on 2cm
Both get you a heavier front edge. They are different techniques and they suit different kitchens.
A laminated edge
We join a second piece of the same material underneath the front edge. Three quarters of an inch plus three quarters of an inch gives you a finished edge of about 1 1/2 inches.
Once that build-up is there, we can shape it. The eased and square edge, the top radius, the bevel, the ogee and the ogee square out are all laminated profiles, and they all finish at 1 1/2 inches.
The trade is that a laminated edge leaves a visible slab line at the front where the two pieces meet. On most profiles it reads as part of the shape and nobody notices it. On a very plain square edge it is more apparent.
A mitered edge
Instead of stacking two pieces flat, we cut both at an angle, usually forty five degrees, and join them so the corner closes. The cut faces end up inside the joint rather than showing at the front.
The result reads as one solid piece of stone. No line across the face, no stacked look. This is our standard edge and it is what most of our customers get, built at 1 5/8 inches, with 2 inches and 2 1/4 available.
It is also the technique behind a waterfall. Running the countertop down the side of an island is the same miter at a larger scale, which is why the top appears to turn the corner and continue rather than meeting a separate panel.
How to choose between them
The simplest way to put it is this. A lamination is chosen for the edge profile. A miter is chosen for the seam appearance.
Go laminated when you want a decorative shape: eased, rounded, ogee, ogee out. Those profiles need the flat build-up underneath to carve into.
Go mitered when you want the front to look like one solid thick piece of stone. That means a clean square or modern drop edge, an edge at 1 1/2 inches or heavier, anything where the counter needs to read monolithic from both the front and the side, and any waterfall end.
There is one more reason to miter that has nothing to do with shape. If your slab has bold veining or strong directional movement, a miter lets us match the vein across the joint so the pattern continues around the corner. On a premium marble-look quartz or a dramatic natural stone, that is the difference between furniture-quality work and something that merely fits.
When 3cm Makes Sense
Plenty of situations, and we are happy to build it.
- You want the thinner 1 1/4 inch edge look. Some kitchens want a lighter profile and a heavy edge would fight the design.
- Your cabinets are new, level and true, so the plywood question does not arise.
- You prefer the slab to be one solid thickness with no build-up at the front at all.
The thing to understand going in is what you will see. A 3cm edge is 1 1/4 inches and it stays 1 1/4 inches, because there is no build-up involved. Set against a 2cm edge finished at 1 1/2, 1 5/8, 2 or 2 1/4, it is the thinnest edge on the list every time.
That is worth saying plainly, because it is the opposite of what the names suggest. If a heavier edge is what you are after, 3cm is not the way to get there. If a lighter edge is what you want, it is exactly right.
What 2cm vs 3cm Countertops Cost
The edge matters more to your number than the thickness does.
Our standard 1 5/8 inch mitered edge costs the same as a simple eased or beveled edge. If you want the miter built to 2 inches or 2 1/4, we do not charge for the taller miter itself, only for the second layer of plywood underlayment a taller edge requires.
The carved profiles are where edge cost actually climbs. Ogee square and ogee square out take considerably more machine time and hand finishing than anything else we make, which is why they are our most expensive.
Beyond that, your slab, your layout and how many cutouts the job needs move the number more than the thickness choice will.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3cm stronger than 2cm?
For a countertop application, both are appropriate when they are supported properly, and that is the key word. The 2cm goes over a plywood underlayment that carries it across the run, and 3cm sits directly on the cabinets. Neither is a compromise. They are two different construction methods.
Why does 2cm end up looking thicker than 3cm?
Because the front edge is built up rather than left at slab thickness. A laminated 2cm edge finishes at about 1 1/2 inches, our standard mitered edge finishes at 1 5/8, and a miter can go to 2 or 2 1/4 if you want. A 3cm slab finishes at its own thickness, about 1 1/4 inches, and it cannot go higher. So once any build-up is involved, 3cm is the thinner edge of the two.
What is the difference between a laminated edge and a mitered edge?

Which thickness do most people choose?

Can I get a waterfall island in 2cm?
Yes, and it is the standard way we build them. A waterfall is a miter at a larger scale, running the top down the side of the island so the stone appears to turn the corner. Because mitering is already our standard edge, a waterfall is the same technique rather than a special case.
Does the thickness change the price much?
Less than people expect. Your slab, your layout, the number of cutouts and the edge profile you choose all move the number more than the thickness does. We will give you a real figure for your specific kitchen when we measure.
How do I decide which is right for my kitchen?
